Depression is the leading cause of ill-health and disability world-wide. For me, it is more personal than that. My mum and dad abandoned me as a child. As I grew up, all I wanted was to have a family and be a great mother. But, that did not happen. My depression got in the way of building a healthy relationship with my children. There were times, I could not be there for them because I had to cope with the effects of depression. My lack of energy and unable to be there emotionally for them did not put me in the running for the mother of the year award. Then, there were the suicidal thoughts that sometimes took away the joy of being alive. Of course, when I was not in depression I did my best but how I wished I knew more how to deal with this mental issue then. I could have been a better mother. Now, I am making it my mission to reach out to those who for one reason or another is afflicted with this condition. The more aware people are the better they may be able to cope with the issue. Through my struggle, I want to share some if the ways I feel have helped me to reduce the devastating impact of depression. That is one of the reason why I got myself trained in Counseling Psychology and also a Mindfulness Coach. I felt the more tools I had the better I am in overcoming depression.
